New patch fixes 17-year-old bug

19:37 8th February 2010

Microsoft's latest security update for Windows is expected to tackle a bug that dates from the time of the DOS operating system.

The 17-year old loophole will be patched in the company's February update, which will also fix a further 25 holes in Windows, five of which are described as "critical."

The bug was discovered by a Google security researcher last January and involves a utility that allows newer versions of Windows to run very old programmes.

As well as dealing with holes in several versions of Windows, the security update also tackles bugs in Office XP, Office 2003 and Office 2004 for Apple Macintosh machines.

In other news, Microsoft has announced the release of two free Security Development Lifestyle (SDL) tools in a bid to help software creators write secure code.

According to the company, software developers are increasingly finding the security of their code put to the test as cybercriminals step up their attacks to take advantage of any vulnerability they can find for financial purposes.
