New partnership aims to make data centres greener

The British Computer Society (BCS) has announced details of a new partnership that is aiming to make IT careers in data centres more sustainable.

Together with the Carbon Trust and Romonet, the society will be introducing new software that could reduce the carbon footprint of one of the IT industry's most consumptive sectors.

Claimed to be an industry first, the tool will allow users to monitor data relating to emissions and efficiency and will be available either as a complete service or per application.

Hugh Jones of the Carbon Trust said that action is needed to prevent both short-term capacity and long-term sustainability issues.

"It is crucial that we make effective tools available to enable companies to identify the right steps to take to reduce energy use and carbon," he said.

According to a report by Version One, 48 per cent of IT directors are very concerned by the environmental impact of their businesses.
