UK employers wanting to hire skilled IT workers from abroad will have difficulty passing the new migration system, as IT has been removed from the skills shortage list.
If new proposals for a points-based migration system go ahead, it is likely to have positive implications for IT professionals in the UK seeking jobs, as the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has recommended that IT is omitted from the shortage occupation list.
The aim of this Home Office proposal is to ensure that businesses try to employ staff from the UK before they offer a job to someone from overseas.
John Brazier, the managing director of the Professional Contractors Group, said: "As the economy enters choppy waters and demand for IT contractors in particular seems to be falling, it is good to see the MAC has recognised that there is no overall IT skills shortage in the UK."
