Microsoft has introduced new software that will encourage IT departments to make corporate data more secure.
IT professionals who are trained to use the software will be able to make sensitive corporate information involving client details and business strategies virtual.
The new cloud servers, the Azure Services Platform, work by hosting and managing networking and storage solutions.
Dan Scarfe, chief executive of Dot Net Solutions, commented: "Some of the smartest guys in the world set up all of these data centres and the buildings themselves have huge amounts of security 24-seven. I would say it is more secure having your data up in the cloud than in your office."
He added that the current security measures exercised by businesses were woefully dire and involved little more than a physical lock on the door to the room where the server was kept.
The concept of a cloud is revolutionary. Microsoft is purchasing servers at a rate of 10,000 every month.
To give an idea of the sheer sizes involved it is illustrative to learn that Facebook runs on just 10,000 servers across the world.
