Digital downloading is the main format people use to consume music and will continue to be in the future, according to Nigel Sachdev, managing director of online music community Stereoboard.com.
Mr Sachdev said that "digital downloading is certainly here to stay, and will continue to be the dominant format for music consumers".
His comments came as new figures by Nielsen SoundScan said that digital songs posted their first year-on-year quarterly drop in the first three months of 2010.
Track sales fell to 312.4 million units, down nearly one per cent from the 315.4 million units scanned in 2009 during the first quarter.
According to Mr Sachdev, the music industry does not make the "killing" expected from digital sales. He cited piracy as a problem but added that the industry is "suffering now because of years of procrastination and lack of innovation".
On April 17th, independent record stores across the world will celebrate Record Store Day.
