More companies use social media in workplace, study finds

A growing number of companies are now making use of social media in the workplace, a new study has revealed.

According to research conducted by Clearswift, more than two-thirds of businesses allow their employees to use social networking sites or web collaboration while at work.

The study also found that more than half of managers questioned feel that web collaboration technology is now "critical" to the future success of their business, while 11 per cent of companies surveyed are making use of websites such as Facebook and Salesforce.com.

Jason Falls, a social media consultant and blogger on socialmediaexplorer.com, said that "businesses should encourage employees to use social networks internally and externally, but only if they first implement clear policies for social media usage and expectations."

Mr Falls added that by letting staff participate on social networking websites, companies can expand their opportunities to draw in a larger number of consumers.
