Mobile data traffic by 2015 will be more than 50 times higher than at the end of 2009, according to a market expert.
Speaking at the Mobile World Congress, Hans Vestberg, chief executive of mobile phone maker Ericsson, also forecast that the number of smartphone devices would grow by four times and the traffic they generate would increase by more than 25 times.
He also predicted three billion new mobile subscriptions in the next five years, adding that the industry's future success does not rely on technology but on applications and fixing problems.
In other news, applications, or apps, for mobile devices will see revenues of $6.1 billion this year, which would represent an 82 per cent of all downloads this year and for 87 per cent of all downloads in 2013, market analyst Gartner was quoted as saying.
"As smartphones grow in popularity and application stores become the focus in the value chain, more consumers will experiment with downloads," Gartner research director Stephanie Baghdassarian was quoted as saying by Computer Weekly.
