The severity of mobile malware is increasing as devices are more connected than in the past, according to Alex Donnely, a portfolio manager at Damovo UK, a convergence and integration company.
"The threat is becoming increasingly more serious," said Mr Donnelly, because "if a worm is able to propagate into the corporate network, much more damage could be done".
His views emerged as Damovo data revealed that in a major survey 55 per cent of IT directors identified mobile social networking as the most important attack vector. Mobile pornography followed with 30 per cent and mobile gaming with eight per cent, according to the survey.
Mr Donnelly advised companies to protect themselves by having a clearly defined mobile device management policy.
Separately, Symantec found that methods used to distribute malware across platforms via spam are also on the rise. The research also revealed that topical spam, such as that relating to the World Cup, is increasing.
