Mid-market smartphones to become 'smarter' in 2010

18:11 25th January 2010

Mid-market smartphone devices will become "progressively smarter" in 2010, according to a market analyst.

Conrad Longmore, editor at Mobile Gazette, said that the sophisticated handsets will offer features that would previously have been limited to phones at the top end of the market.

He predicted that a new iPhone is likely to be launched in 2010 and added that Nokia's Symbian S60 platform and Samsung's Bada will "push smartphone capabilities to mid-range devices".

His comments follow a recent report by consulting firm Futuresource Consulting saying that more than one billion people will own a smartphone by 2013.

In other news, the use of indoor base stations, known as femtocells, is revolutionising the telecommunications industry, an expert has said.

Femtocells have been "causing a major stir in the telecoms industry as they represent a major new opportunity for economically delivering increased mobile broadband coverage and data speeds," according to Simon Saunders, chairman of the Femto Forum.
