Microsoft has announced plans to refresh Hotmail in a bid to gain a larger share in the email market.
Hotmail's new design is expected to enhance document sharing and make it easier to filter the contents of a user's inbox by subject and sender.
Commenting on the redesign, Ben Camm-Jones, news editor of Web User magazine, said: "Convenience and functionality are the key elements of the new Hotmail and this will help Microsoft attract and keep hold of new users, as well as hang on to the ones it already has."
Hotmail's new face is also expected to feature improved anti-spam functions. Earlier research has shown that 73 per cent of average UK adults received a spam email in the past year.
In addition, the interface is redesigned to make it phone friendly as it is now easier to view photos via email.
"What Microsoft is doing here is reacting to trends in computing - this is the age of the low-powered, portable device," Mr Camm-Jones explained.
