Microsoft will be naming two new web-based executives to head up a split platforms and services division.
The multinational technology corporation is reorganising this group as its president Kevin Johnson will be leaving the company to take over as chief executive of Juniper Networks.
The rest of Microsoft's web-based operations will be spun off into the online services business, which will be responsible for the companies search, advertising and MSN businesses.
Steve Ballmer, chief executive of Microsoft, believes that the windows business is "firing on all cylinders".
He said: "We see tremendous opportunity in search and advertising, and we have a clear strategy for investing in success today and growth in the future."
In other Microsoft news, the company this week bolstered its credentials with advocates of open source software with a donation to the Apache organisation, which overseas development of the programs.
