Microsoft has been ordered to pay $106 million after being found guilty of wilful infringement of two patents relating to communications security belonging to software maker VirnetX.
According to US reports, VirnetX, which claims to have developed its patent portfolio from a US Central Intelligence Agency security project, expects Microsoft to appeal the decision by the US district court in Texas.
Microsoft faced treble damages because the violation was found to be wilful, according to court documents.
The news comes just a few days after the web giant lost an appeal in its legal battle with i4i over XML support in Office 2003/2007.
In other news, Microsoft is poised to become the biggest research and development (R&D) spender in the world, the company's chief operating officer has said.
Speaking at the London School of Economics, Kevin Turner said that Microsoft will double its R&D spending to $9.5 billion in 2010, $3 billion more than its closest competitor in the IT sector.
