Microsoft enters free security market

16:50 30th September 2009

Computing giant Microsoft has launched a new security package that could transform the IT industry.

The firm has launched a free anti-virus package, named Microsoft Security Essentials, which can be downloaded by any user running a valid, legal copy of Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

It is hoped the initiative could create a revolution in the IT industry by increasing the availability of security features without requiring users to pay out extra money.

The move could encourage businesses and individuals to upgrade their operating systems so as to receive the free security software and the initiative could also encourage other providers to deliver security packages for free.

IT training within businesses often focuses on ensuring that users are aware of the dangers associated with hackers and viruses, while security software usually accounts for a significant proportion of a company's IT spend.

Earlier this month, market research firm Infonetics Research found the network security market is set to reach $5.7 billion (£3.57 billion) by 2013.
