Microsoft is poised to become the biggest research and development (R&D) spender in the world, the company's chief operating officer has said.
Speaking at the London School of Economics, Kevin Turner said that Microsoft will double its R&D spending to $9.5 billion in 2010, $3 billion more than its closest competitor in the IT sector.
He also said that the company is unlikely to expand its operations in China until the Chinese government takes additional steps to protect intellectual property.
Turner went on to predict that the group will sell 300 million copies of the Windows 7 operating system in 2010, following 90 million sales to date.
In other news, Window users across Europe are to be offered browser choices following a deal between Microsoft and the European Commission.
Starting from Monday, a pop-up window will ask users whether they want to choose and install one of 12 different browsers or continue using Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
