Microsoft needs to improve Internet Explorer in order to maintain its market dominance, according editor-in-chief at professional IT publication Computer Weekly.
Bryan Glick, editor-in-chief at Computer Weekly, said that Microsoft would now have to "make sure it's competitive in developing new functions for Internet Explorer to make sure there is a reason for people to want to choose it".
His comments come as Opera Software announced that downloads of its latest browser, Opera 10.50, have more than doubled since the introduction of the web browser choice screen to Windows.
Hakon Wium Lie, chief technology officer at Opera Software, said that this increase in popularity confirms that web users will choose different browsers if they are given the option.
According to Mr Glick, Internet Explorer's domination was being questioned even before the introduction of the choice as rivals like Firefox had already created "a much more competitive market".
In related news, Microsoft has launched a technology preview of Internet Explorer 9, its latest web browser, which has an objective of speeding up access to internet pages.
The company said the new browser enables web developers to offer users better experiences that render quicker and more consistently.
