Microsoft 7 'on track'

15:00 25th July 2008

Microsoft's Windows 7 development remains on track, according to the unit head responsible for its production.

Microsoft has released few details of the product, which is due to be shipped by January 2010, but has assured customers that it will contain new multi-touch user interface and big architectural changes.

Some top executives had previously indicated that the software would be available for release by the end of 2009.

Bill Veghte, Microsoft 7 unit head, tried to address these time-scale contradictions.

He said: "The product is tracking very, very well. We are committed and looking good, relative to our shipping commitment - three years from general availability of Windows Vista."

Yesterday (July 24th), Microsoft executives ruled out an acquisition of Yahoo - despite acknowledging that the Internet company would have provided an online search boost - as the two sides continue to disagree about how much Yahoo is worth.
