Smartphone users are increasingly opting for mobile maps and navigation applications, new figures have revealed.
According to a new report by comScore, there has been a 68 percent jump in the use of mobile mapping and direction services across Europe in the last year.
The highest growth among EU countries was recorded in the UK market, with an 86 percent rise compared to the same period last year to 5.7 million mobile map users.
Neil McHugh, co-founder of rightmobilephone.co.uk, commented that "travel apps generally are quite popular, things like tube maps that work offline, tourist maps that again store data offline, train times, etc."
He described Nokias decision to make its own mapping software and voice turn by turn completely free as "a really smart move", adding that it gives the company an advantage over devices that use services like Google maps.
"Having maps stored locally on your device removes the need of having a good internet connection," Mr McHugh explained.
