Manx Telecom offers faster broadband speeds

09:41 13th March 2009

Internet service provider (ISP) Manx Telecom is benefitting from higher average broadband speeds than other web users.

A study from broadband regulator Ofcom found that the ISP, which provides web services to people on the Isle of Man, provides an average connection speed of 5.5Mbps, which is around double the UK figure.

Broadband is available to every household in the region, facilitating home learning at speeds of up to 8Mbps for nearly 23,000 people.

Tim Craine, the government director of e-business, said: "I'm of course delighted to see Manx Telecom broadband users are benefiting from higher average speeds than their UK counterparts - something which is clearly due to the significant investment made by Manx Telecom in its infrastructure."

Manx Telecom said it has invested considerable sums in its broadband network which has facilitated the higher connection speeds.

ISPs in the UK are under considerable pressure to invest in high-speed broadband networks, although the price tag is expected to reach almost £30 billion.
