A £30 million virtual training centre is to be launched in Warrington, to further the field of material chemistry.

The universities of Manchester, Bolton and Liverpool have backed the innovative project, along with the Science and Technology Facilities Council and the government.

In a development that could create additional IT jobs in the region, the Daresbury campus will aim to become a hub for international researchers in the field and will provide work-based training services to enhance the talents of scientists affiliated with the initiative.

Professor Mike Turner, of the University of Manchester, said: "Project scientists across the university will work closely with industrial collaborators developing new materials or processes for applications in printable electronics, pharmaceutical science, energy and medicine."

He explained that researchers will use the new facilities to investigate the "characterisation of surfaces, fabrication of electronic devices under inert atmospheres and the determination of molecular and materials structure by mass spectrometry and X-ray scattering".

The Knowledge Centre for Material Chemistry was launched by the secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills - John Denham.

It was awarded £15 million from the North West Development Agency and academic partner organisations to investigate energy and sustainability, complex materials and formulated products.
