Spotify, the Swedish music streaming service, has rolled out a series of new features that will make it function as both a media player and a social networking tool.
Users now have the option of incorporating songs from their own computers, including directly from Apple's iTunes, into their playlists as well as streaming tracks from Spotify's catalogue. On top of that, they can now connect to Facebook, interact with their contacts and view other people's music, all via the service's own portal.
According to Paul Brindley, managing director of Music Ally, the group has taken a massive step forward in its effort to beat iTunes at its own game.
"Spotify has stolen a march on iTunes and has set itself up to be a more serious competitor it was [a competitor] already, but this takes it further along the road to really challenging iTunes," Mr Brindley said.
He added that it was only a matter of time before Apple responded with an overhaul of its own music player.
