MP Tom Watson has called for a proper debate over the plans to cut off online users who breach web copyright before the Digital Economy Bill becomes law.
Speaking at the Stop Disconnection Demo, a protest against disconnection and censorship on the internet, Mr Watson said he hoped that the three main political parties would listen to voters and concerned MPs and "be sensible" by scrapping the bill's online copyright infringement provisions before passing it.
The MP for West Bromwich East, who specialises in digital policy, said that the bill, which will have its second reading on April 6th, may not be properly examined if a general election is called for May 6th.
"There are plenty of other measures that can be discussed, but the point is we are not going to have time to discuss the alternatives", he said.
Mr Watson added that the prospect of the bill being "bounced through" parliament had annoyed many voters concerned by it.
