Desktop PCs may soon become a thing of the past as the number of people opting for a laptop has soared, reports the Daily Mail.
Amazon.com revealed that laptops numbered seven of its top ten best-selling products with not a desktop in sight.
The popularity of laptops can be attributed to the decrease in price and the increase in wireless network coverage.
Peter Lin, analyst at iSuppli, told the national tabloid: "On both price and performance, laptops are so competitive now it's surprising they weren't able to catch up with desktops even earlier."
He added that people were finding they needed to log onto the internet in cafes and public transport for work reasons and the abundance of good quality notebooks was also a factor.
In 1981, after much discussion of the need for a computer that could be used remotely, the Osborne Computer Corporation released the first commercially available portable computer, Osborne 1.
