Laptop demand expected to increase

Worldwide demand for laptops will drive the PC market into an area of growth for the next several years, according to a market research firm.

Despite a sluggish economy, IDC has predicted that global PC shipments will grow by 15.7 per cent this year, hitting 311 million units.

The report also projects that worldwide PC sales growth will remain in double digits through to 2011. This may slip to nine per cent by 2012, when analysts expect annual shipments to surpass 482 million.

"We continue to see a rapid transition to portable PCs around the world, even as economic pressures rise," said Loren Loverde, director of IDC's quarterly PC Tracker.

"The trend reflects the increasing importance of computing, not just in the home or office, but as an integrated part of our lives," she added.

Last week, 3 UK suggested that the falling cost of mobile communication had made it easier for more people to work while on the move.
