The development of a Logistics Academy North-East (Lane) could help provide excellent training facilities for the logistics sector, reports the Northern Echo.
Around 72,000 people are employed in logistics in the UK and the belief is that a dedicated training centre could help the sector reach around the globe.
Development of the Lane has been achieved with the assistance of a variety of organisations and will be where 5,200 logistics companies can go to for training advice, employer support and funding.
Dr Mick Jackson, chief executive of Skills for Logistics, told the paper: "The academy signifies the importance of industry-relevant, demand-led, high quality training provision."
He added that it would offer employers the opportunity to seek the best industry training available.
The training centre could also encourage people to seek a career change into logistics or associated businesses.
The Lane is based at Middlesbrough College, which, according to its website, was established in the northern town towards the end of last year. The new college consolidates previous sites at Longlands, Acklam, Kirby and Marton.
