Kinect 'competing for Wii audience'

Kinect 'competing for Wii audience'

Microsoft's Kinect video console is competing to grab market share of the popular Nitendo's Wii, said Jamie Sefton, sector manager at games network Game Republic.

Mr. Sefton said the Kinect is "very much aimed at families and, let's not beat around the bush here, the Wii audience – that is what they're going for".

The expert also added that this new console is "a really exciting technology", but added that its prospects "will depend on the price point," which has yet to be confirmed by Microsoft.

His comments followed the premiere of the Kinect for Xbox 360 in Los Angeles earlier this week. Like the Wii, the Kinect for Xbox 360 tracks the user's body movements and gestures and can even understand their voice.

Separately, PricewaterhouseCoopers said the recession didn't affect the degree of disruptive technologies embraced by the UK entertainment and media market, and the speed at which they are adopted.
