KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has moved 11,200 of its crew members to Gmail as part of a transition to Google Apps Premier Edition, according to a news report.
The company-wide transition signifies the company's move into cloud computing. Gmail provides 25Gbytes of storage per e-mail account and offers Google Talk integrated instant messaging service. It also offers Message Translation, allowing users to translate e-mail into 42 different languages.
Other companies using Google's cloud-based office productivity suite are [include] Rentokil and [the?] Guardian Media Group.
The use of Gmail means KLM crew members can send and receive e-mails from any internet-connected device anywhere in the world, including laptops, shared computers, Blackberries and mobile phones.
In other news, cloud computing has reduced IT costs in Vodaphone and Channel 4 by 90 per cent, the companies have said.
Speaking at the Powered by Cloud conference in London, representatives of the groups said the cost of their cloud-based processing was a tenth of traditional in-house computing.
