It's 'silly' not to recycle old mobile phones

Millions of mobile phones are gathering dust in Britain's houses, new figures have revealed.

According to a survey conducted by Consumer Focus, UK consumers are sitting on an estimated 85 million old handsets that could make money if they sold them.

The group's report also suggested that nearly 70 per cent of mobile phone users have at least one device lying around unused.

Commenting on the findings of the survey, Mike Webster, a spokesperson for Wastewatch, said: "You'd be silly not to get them recycled. For a start you can get paid for it which is always an encouragement. It's also a great source of income for organisations like charities."

He added that it is critical now that mobile phones are such fast moving items, that they are recycled.

In late March, research by Ovum found that some eight million mobile phones were recycled in the UK last year - double the amount that was recycled in 2008.
