Internet users should delete emails they suspect of being spam

12:58 10th May 2010

Emails that feel like spam should be immediately deleted, according to Rik Ferguson, senior security advisor at security software and services company Trend Micro.

"If you look at the subject line and the subject line is clearly spam, then don't, even out of curiosity, go and read the email", Mr Ferguson said, adding that "if it looks like spam or feels like spam, delete it".

He warned users that their computers can be harmed by spam emails containing active content which is being pulled from external sites. These can infect the recipients' machines when opened.

Mr Ferguson urged computer users not to "overshare" their email address to stave off the possibility of receiving spam and added that, "ideally", they should not reveal it on any website.

His comments came after Windows security software provider Sunbelt Software warned of a marked rise in malware and spam activity linked to the general election.
