Online users should take extra care when setting up a password to prevent being a target of hackers, an expert has said.
"What computer users need to realise is that the hackers know the most common passwords used by the public, and so can automatically bombard an online account with hundreds if not thousands of predictable choices to see if any of them work," said virus expert Graham Cluley.
His comments emerged as a new report has highlighted the most common passwords used by consumers on the internet.
The report by data security firm Imperva was generated by a list of 32 million passwords which were leaked from popular site RockYou.com after it was hacked.
In other news, shoppers using their credit cards to shop online are exposed to fraud, an expert has said.
"What we have seen since the introduction of chip and pin is a reduction of card cloning and card skimming on transactions in high street shops," said Sarah Blaney, card fraud expert at life assistance company CPP.
