Internet shopping is continuing to grow in popularity as a result of increased confidence on the part of users and the convenience involved, according to the British Retail Consortium.
Uptake of broadband services is rising across the UK as people increasingly view an internet connection as a necessity to everyday life rather than being a luxurious commodity.
In addition, broadband is about the only utility which is being constantly driven down in price by such intense market competition.
Internet shopping is correspondingly on the rise, with consumer confidence rising whether as a result of computer courses or existing knowledge.
Richard Dodd, head of media campaigns at the trade body, said: "In the past people were nervous about online payments, but those security concerns have been largely overcome."
Home study and IT training have helped to familiarise more people with the home computer, while the convenience and relative security of online shopping has seen figures soar.
According to figures from Capgemini, over £4.67 billion was spent by online shoppers during December.
