Computers and mobile phones are a "lifeline" for people who might otherwise become depressed or anxious, according to a new study.
Conducted by market research firm Future Laboratory and commissioned by Virgin Media, the report found that 36 per cent of respondents admitted to feelings of anxiety when disconnected.
Unable to use the machines they use for home study or just everyday communication, just under a third (31 per cent) were most concerned about being unable to work and make money on their laptop or PC.
Two-thirds actually felt more relaxed when browsing the internet, leading the telecoms firm to dub them 'Sosos' - those who switch on to switch off.
Commenting on the survey's results, Zara Rabinowicz, technology specialist at Stuff Magazine, said electronic devices can become "lifelines to the outside world: whether it's a chat to your mum, or an update on a Facebook page".
