Internet 'is main source of entertainment'

The internet is becoming the main source of people's shopping and entertainment, according to Dan Oliver, editor of .net magazine.

"It's definitely more convenient to have a net connection, but it depends how you measure importance," Mr Oliver said.

Mr Oliver went on to say that whoever has had to contact a bank via the phone, or had to stand in a lengthy queue to obtain information on a public service, will see their net connection as "an essential commodity".

He went on to say that using the net as a way to deliver advice and services is only going to increase.

According to a report from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, a computer and home internet connection are now considered essential for all non-pensioner households.

The report also found that despite the recession, members of the public involved in the research have not reduced what they consider necessities. They still believe that, as a minimum, people need not just physical essentials, but also things that allow them to participate in society.
