Computer experts have released security software to tackle a glitch in the internet's addressing system.
The flaw - which allowed hackers to redirect users to fake web pages, even if victims typed the correct address into a browser - is being tackled by internet giants such as Microsoft and Cisco.
If the glitch remains unresolved it can make it easy for hackers to operate 'phishing scams', in which users are tricked into disclosing credit card and personal details.
Security expert Dan Kaminsky, who helped design the security patch, revealed that something of this scale had not happened before.
He said: "People should be concerned but they should not be panicking."
"We have bought you as much time as possible to test and apply the patch."
Microsoft has also revealed this week that a bug in its Access database program could be exploited by hackers to access personal information.
