Internet banking fraud rises

16:08 26th March 2009

Internet banking fraud soared by more than 130 per cent through the course of 2008, resulting in over £52 million lost, according to payments association Apacs.

Overall, credit card fraud soared by nearly 15 per cent to just under £610 million for the whole year, with weaker card protection on internet purchases thought to be a contributing factor for the rise.

People could seek computer training to make sure they understand the risks involved with shopping online and how to spot phishing scams and other forms of malicious online content.

According to IT Pro, Apacs said: "To help avoid malware attacks, always ensure you have up-to-date anti-virus software installed and ask for technical support if your computer starts acting oddly."

The organisation added that malware attacks are beginning to increase in frequency alongside phishing scams, with key-logging becoming a growing problem.

Broadband provider BT has announced plans to test high-speed internet services in a range of UK cities, meaning web users could have better access to home learning resources.
