Internet access 'is more widespread in the UK'

19:14 5th July 2010

Accessing the internet has become more widespread in Britain, according to James Smythe, the UK Online Measurement Company (UKOM) general manager.

"Getting connected to the internet at home has become easier, and it has become a part of more people's working lives too," Mr Smythe said.

Mr Smythe went on to say that faster connections are a factor in the UK's increased internet use.

"Widespread access to decent broadband speeds means that the internet is getting better at making people's lives easier," he added.

His comments followed figures published by UKOM which showed the UK internet audience grew by five per cent from 36.9 million people in May 2009 to 38.8 million people in May 2010.

Mr Smythe said that UKOM's figures show that the UK is "a strong digital economy" as people are able to get online more easily now with less need to be technically competent.

Being able to exploit the use of the internet requires, however, IT training.
