Illegal downloaders to face the music in France

18:17 4th January 2010

People downloading music illegally online in France will feel the tough effects of the country's new law against internet piracy, a news report has said.

Under the new rules, which were backed by President Nicolas Sarkozy, illegal downloaders will be sent an electronic warning to their inboxes, then a formal letter and if they persist breaking the law, they must appear before a judge.

"The internet is a fabulous world, but it needs rules, if you want to get cinema, music or video games in the future," Michel Thiolliere, a French senator, was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"What we think is that after the first message... about two-thirds of the people (will) stop their illegal usages of the internet," he said.

The senator went on to say that after the second message more than 95 per cent will end the "bad usage".

Those who are against the new law claim it is too draconian or that technology has already found a way to sidestep it.
