The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) has confirmed that it will reconsider a plan to create an internet domain specifically for adult sites.
In 2005, Icann had given the green light to the .xxx scheme but overturned its decision two years later amidst a firestorm of protests from US conservative groups which opposed the plan on moral grounds.
But an independent review has now concluded that the decision was not fair and that the plan should be re-examined.
According to BBC News, Icann will discuss the proposals at its meeting in Nairobi, Kenya and could decide to back the plan.
In other news, the majority of UK web users are not opposed to the government getting involved in the regulation of the internet, a new survey for the BBC World Service has found.
The poll, conducted by GlobeScan for the BBC, found that 55 per cent of British internet users believe there is a case for government oversight of some aspects of the net.
