IT training news: Geotagging photos 'could put social media at risk'

Developments in the IT industry have allowed the wide use of geotagging photos but they can pose risk to social media, according to David Bennett, director EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) consumer business development at Webroot software.

The expert said he expected geotagging photos will 'explode' next year but he also said that while some features, like a nearby coffee house could be useful, social media users could not be aware of potential threats to security.

"Now that in itself doesn't really necessarily present a security risk, but the challenge is where people take photos with their smartphone and the smartphone will assign a GPS tag to the photograph," he said.

Mr Bennett went on to say that internet users who are very open about posting information up to social media sites could expose themselves to security threats by posting a picture of their house or their new car, and then expose the exact location of their house or brand new car.

"As a malicious code writer, it's a pretty simple code to write to find out what the GPS location of the photo is," explained Mr Bennett.

Confused.com said last month that home insurance costs could go up as a result of geotagging on social media.
