IT training and security are both crucial in getting rid of the threat to business posed by social media, according to Sebastian Zabala, Panda Security's country manager for the UK and Sweden.
"Staff need to know that the information they put on their Facebook pages needs to comply with company policy... and they need to realise that information you put up on the internet is never private," he said.
"Of course, it's also important to protect yourself through technical applications, such as anti-malware scanners" he said.
It has been widely reported recently that security fears have led some top German companies to block their staff's access to Facebook, Twitter and other social networking utilities.
The expert went on to say that restrictions were often necessary when employees were accessing such sites from the workplace.
He suggested restrictions like allowing workers to browse Facebook pages but not allowing them to post on the site when they are inside the office.
He said doing that not only could pose a problem with malware or phishing, but there also could be a problem with workers publishing information that bosses don't want to be assigned to them as a company.
