The growth of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) has encouraged technological advances in voice services, according to Simon Milner, director of group industry policy at BT.
Mr Milner said that every company in the digital industry has to find ways to "respond to disruptive technologies and disruptive consumer behaviour".
He went on to say that companies in the VoIP sector have come up with "really innovative new approaches to voice". The technology behind VoIP is a topic that could be taught in IT training.
His remarks emerged when speaking at the Westminster eForum keynote seminar: Filesharing, copyright and the digital consumer, which took place at Congress Centre in London earlier this month.
Separately, according to a fresh report published by Frost & Sullivan, the VoIP access and session initiation protocol (SIP) trunking services market will continue to build on the huge growth it showed last year, despite these challenging economic times.
