Employers looking to hire new recruits value experience and skills more than qualifications, according to Gerry McLaughlin of IT Contractor.com, a portal for IT contractors with news and advice on IR35 legislation and the IT contract market.
"It would be nigh on impossible to get an IT job having taught yourself the skills. Companies either want qualifications or experience," he said.
"There are lots of self taught people out there who can turn their hand to writing a bit of software, but they find it difficult to get into a company if they haven't worked in IT before," he added.
The expert went on to say that the IT industry is notoriously difficult to get into for the self taught.
He said people who have taught themselves a certain skill tend to have to find their own work and own clients and work at a cheaper rate than those who came through the conventional route of getting a degree.
Some of the work they do might include developing low cost websites.
