IT training: Personality 'is important when applying for a job'

IT training is crucial to secure a job in the sector but so is personality, according to Michael Dean, head of marketing at the National Computing Centre.

Although accredited qualifications are important to have on a CV, employers will also look for personality, Mr Dean said.

Competence-based qualifications are only "part of the recruitment picture", he added.

"Employers will also typically be looking for soft skills, such as ability to get on with others, self motivation, leadership and project management too," he said.

He added that ideal candidates should have "a mix of both".

His comments emerged as the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's and KPMG Report on Jobs revealed that, while there was a strong rise in both permanent placements and temp billings during November, there is still a skills shortage in some sectors.

REC's chief executive, Kevin Green, warned changes to immigration policy "could exacerbate" shortages in the short-term.

He said the industry needed to build pipelines into growth sectors through better support and guidance to job-seekers.
