IT training: Lack of IT literacy 'is good news for those who have the skills'

A lack of people undertaking IT training is good news for those who do have the knowledge, according to Gerry McLaughlin of ITContractor.com.

The take-up of degrees in the subject has been weak recently, with the consequence that "there is not a great bank of IT-literate people waiting to come into the profession over the next few years," Mr McLaughlin said.

But, he said, this could prove good news for those who do have the know-how to make their way in the industry.

"IT will prove to be a lucrative and much safer profession over the next five to ten years," he said. "The information age has arrived and those working in IT are in the vanguard of it."

In other related IT industry news, ITContractor.com said declining numbers of young people studying the subject at school and an increasing demand for qualified staff could leave the ICT industry facing a skills shortage.
