IT teams must point out security dangers of new technology, says Sophos

IT departments must make their companies aware of the security risks of adopting a technological innovation, according to Carole Theriault, senior security consultant at Sophos.

"People do get excited about new technologies and want to embrace them and it's the IT team that are supposed to be the ones that are basically steering the ship," Ms Theriault said.

She urged IT units to ask for advice from a third party if they are not sure about the security implications of a particular new technology.

Ms Theriault noted that emerging technologies will face the risk of being targeted by new cyber attacks "as long as there's money to be made and information to be gained".

Her comments came after a new survey published by Infosecurity Europe suggested that the usage of new technologies such as social networks and cloud computing has raised the vulnerability of UK organisations to new cyber attacks.
