IT staff have mixed emotions over home working

IT professionals have mixed feelings about the option of working from home, a new survey has claimed.

The poll, commissioned by the office furniture manufacturer Steelcase, revealed that those in the IT industry believe it is important for employers to allow their employees to telecommute, and that 80 per cent of respondents thought that this increased morale and turnover.

However, less than one-third of those questioned say that they work from home, as they believe that their employers really prefer them in the office and that telecommuting will hamper career growth.

In addition, 80 per cent believed that the telecommuting trend will continue over the next five years, particularly as pressure increases over carbon emissions.

Last month, Gartner Dataquest revealed that one in four employees in the US worked from home for at least one day a week last year.
