IT spending predicted to top £400bn

Analysts firm Gartner has predicted that global spending on IT services will rise by 9.5 per cent in 2008.

Gartner forecasts that spending on IT services in 2008 will top £410 billion, up from £376 billion in 2007, but the technology research company did warn that growth will slow a little to £438 billion in 2009.

The firm also disclosed that business leaders are increasingly outsourcing as a means of cutting costs and that it had detected a degree of caution from enterprise leaders as a result of financial uncertainty.

Kathryn Hale, research vice president at Gartner, said in a statement: "Some outsourcing contract signings are being delayed and some projects are being placed on hold."

Consulting and development and integration are growing steadily due to this demand for cost reduction.

Gartner expect that these areas will grow to £163 billion in 2008 - which is an increase of 10.1 per cent from 2007.
