IT companies should keep track of social trends as they become increasingly important in business and commercial systems, Gartner has advised in a new report.
The research analyst has released a report that says that IT groups should review all staff systems and working practices to incorporate trends that can solve business and government problems in "new ways".
Scott Nelson, managing vice president at Gartner, said that social influences are particularly important in marketing strategies.
He said: "Companies should work the network and find out where their customers and potential employees are making decisions.
However, Mr Nelson did warn companies that "slowness to respond can cost firms incredibly large sums of money and may drive them out of business all together".
In other news, a web 2.0 security firm has advised organisations to do more to police their employees' use of social networking sites.
