IT security 'a real concern'

Meeting the combined needs of IT data security and budget constraints can be a real challenge for IT professionals, it has been claimed.

Vice-president of the pre-sales and sales specialist organisation at Symantec John W Turner said that IT professionals can feel that they are constantly walking on a tightrope to balance the two different needs.

"Every technology leader I talk to says they feel like they are always walking on this tightrope, which is how much can they operationalise, because they are [reducing costs] or trying to be more efficient," he said.

There is a balance that must be drawn between risk and reward, he said, adding that business leaders currently question whether they are addressing the right level of risk in the business environment.

Mr Turner was speaking at the Gartner Information Security Summit, which took place in London earlier this week. It was designed to give organisations the training they need to be able to combine risk management and compliance with business enablement.
