Virtualisation, cloud computing and social media represent the future of the IT sector, an expert has claimed.
Speaking at the Trustmarque Solutions Customer Event 2010 in York, Gartner research vice-president Philip Dawson highlighted the importance of new technologies and how they could drive IT jobs in the UK and abroad.
Virtualisation is key because it could drive other areas such as green IT, Mr Dawson said, but it must be approached in a pragmatic, structured way.
"You need to do this today - virtualisation is moving from being just consolidation to being agility and all about sourcing," he said.
According to estimates from Gartner, around 30 per cent of workloads are in a virtual environment, but this figure could double or triple within three years.
The expert also noted the importance of social network Twitter, since the website grew 1,382 per cent in 2008.
He added that 62 per cent of new Twitter users are "of business-user age" - between 39 and 51.
Gartner's 1,200 research analysts advise business executives in more than 80 countries.
