The IT sector will continue to grow over the next ten years, unlike other industries, according to an employment forecast report.

The IT and Telecoms Insights 2008 Employment Forecast Report, produced by e-skills, indicates that demand for high level IT professionals will grow by 2.5 per cent by 2016 - compared with an increase of 0.5 per cent in the UK workforce overall.

The report, which suggests that IT-based careers are protected from the effects of economic uncertainty, also revealed that around five per cent of the UK's workforce is now employed in the IT industry.

James Toovey, managing director of recruitment firm Langley James, believes that this high demand will push up IT salaries.

He said: "We have seen an encouraging trend of rising salaries in a range of IT jobs in the first half of 2008.

The average annual wage for IT professions following this increase now stands at £34,217.

Nationally across all industry sectors the average yearly wage is £23,764.
